EMO subculture

I think everyone have heard (and have seen I suppose) about Emo subculture. But do we really know what it is and where does it come from?

According to the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Youth Culture « Emo, short for “emotional music”, is an evolving and complex youth subculture that listens to a specific genre of music, which is characterized by feelings of vulnerability and a willingness to express heart-felt confessions about adolescence ».

This music is supposed to draw from various genres of contemporary music including rock, rap, punk, indie, pop, and heavy metal by artists such as Finch, Taking Back Sunday, Atmosphere, Slug, Coheed and Cambria, Snow Patrol, and Dash Board Confessional. It has his origins in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. The mouvement changed and developped during the years to the actual forme.

Critics
Emos began to be marginalized due to their style and beliefs. As certain fashion trends and attitudes began to be associated with “Emo”, heavy criticism fell upon those who followed the “music genre” and now confusion exists between those who follow the Emo music genre or the Emo sub-culture.
Here are some exemples of opinions about Emo kids:

"Emo is really about being emotionally depressed and talking about your depression and showing your depression, even using the black eyeliner. It's really about life is not worth living."

“It is often very difficult to identify the gender of an emo, and even the emo themselfs may not be entirely sure of their sex. Many of the emo kind express this by saying they are bisexual. Contrary to popular belief, this is not just a fashion trend; they just cannot decide whether they are male or female.“ http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Emo

“Many enjoy taking pictures of themselves with one side of their face showing, as if they are ashamed of being them. This, like the haircut, further leads people to believe that emos have only one eye. Smiling in pictures is rare, and it is common to give the peace sign sideways for no apparent reason. “ http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Emo

“It is 100% absolutely true that being "emo" constitutes committing self-harm, writing poetry, being depressed, and identifying one's self as bisexual. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Emo

Defense
However, there are some people who defend Emos:

“According to CNN, EMO kids enjoy to hurt themselves and they also have major depression that tends to not go away. However from all the EMO kids that I know I don’t know any that actually injure themselves. I understand some kids may look/dress EMO but that doesn't mean that they are or committed to such a lifestyle. I personally think people that do harm themselves have their own issues that have nothing to do with EMO. I’ve noticed that people often misjudge EMOs and half the time media gives information that is not true, sensationally alarming for parents, adults but not accurate at all. I don’t think it’s fair.”https://www.teenink.com/raw/Opinion/article/48094/The-Emo-Subculture/

"Just consider the thought that not every teen that listens to My Chemical Romance and The Used is EMO. The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live. Everyone should be treated equally, no matter what they wear, what color they are, how they look, and who they are, everyone in this world is equal."

"For many youth, Emo subculture facilitates identity formation, social interactions and emotional involvement. It is a place where many adolescents share their experiences about the world and express their feelings about life through music." http://wber.monroe.edu/EmoECYC.pdf

  1. I think Emo subculture is very interesting in they ideas from their began, but in fact now young people wear like Emo but very often they don't know their idea...

  2. Well... I never heard EMO music and... I won't hear in the future. It is awfull. I don't like this music becouse I don'y understand this music.

  3. I personally don't really understand this style of life. It is totally opposite to how should youth look like ( at least for me, which means: being full of life, energy, love, positive ideas how to change the world for better. It's also really sad because I'm sure that part of this people have some deep psychical problems and they're all still very young! I also don't really like this kind of music but I think that it's good for them that they're doing something creative.

  4. I'm personally tolerant person so for me it's not a problem to accept people like EMO. For me it is very interesting thing why people which call themselves become EMO. I know that some of them don't know anything about beeing EMO. But it's like with yobbo, skinhead. But EMO people are a littel bit scary because the majority of them have problem with their sanity.

  5. I try to be a broad-minded and I have always thought that I'm such a person but honestly I can't stand this culture and I really don't understand it.
In my opinion people need to grow up to show something using their clothes or their outlook. In the EMO culture people are often too young to be aware of what they do.
It can be also dangerous because they often try to commit a suicide.

  6. I chose this topic because I wanted to get more information about Emo sunculture, which I must admit which I couldn't support. And in fact nothing changed. I've learned a little bit about it's beginnings, about music, but I think today's Emo subculture isn't the same group that once. This kikd do not really know where all the ideas come from, an I think they do not really know the ideas. The've seen something new and now want to use it to schock everybody. They invited the idea of suiciding and hurting themselves just to be diffesrent, to scock. I think this kids aren't yet mentally mature.

  7. When i look at today's Emo... well it make me laugh. Maybe i don't know much about them but when i see someone on the street I have to smile. I think that them clothes are just funny. For me this style is artificial. Walking around and talk that world is bad and life is brutal. I can't understand it.

  8. I am tolerant person , so for me everyone can looks and behave in his own way.... Their lifestyle are very interesting, funny. I admire those people for their courage. They are also very individual people for me.

  9. At the beginning, emo culture was dramatically diferent that nowadays. Ideas was.. perorated inside out :-)
So, recently we have a very fun emo kids.
Music, people and all the emo culture oscillate around pain, regrets, death and so on. Oh, of course scars too.
But, Wolter's law is actual all the time.

  10. In my opinion "golden edge" of emo end and now It's hard to find real emo people, during walking on the street. I think it was temporary subculture, now teenagers prefer lifestyle known as banana kids.

  11. I don’t know personally anyone who would be EMO, so I can’t say my own experience with this culture, but I heard that it’s really depressing style of life. In my opinion if some kind of thinking induce young people to hurt themselves, to see their lives as worthless and filled with sadness- it isn’t good, but straight destructive. I have nothing against their expressive style of dressing or even making make-up by boys if they want, but deciding to become bisexual or to slash one’s wrists only to conform oneself to be EMO is for my really horrible.

  12. I'm optimist so I can understand ppessimist people like EMO. Their life must be very sad. I think that this kind of music has too big influence on young people. It can lead to mentally problems like depression. Nowadays more amd more people like EMO commit suicides. It's frightening!

  13. I don't understend EMO culture and their point oh view.I'm optymistic person, full of energy and humour so I can't stand so pesimistic philosophy of life.I think that peples who listen this kind of music and choose this style of life must have some deep psychical problems. It is too distructive and lead to some mentally problems like depression.

  14. I think we should go more deeper that to say "emo is pesimistic subculture, I don't understand this". At first, except this teenagers' subcuture, which is (in my opinion) only a temporary type a lifestyle, we should to look, that exist the other side this culture. I think music is so good- and maybe what is the difference between this emo-music and for example a sad song about unhappy love (Justin Hayward or Tori Amos)? The really emo subculture lean on our melancolic side, and in my opinion teenagers with awful make-up and hairstyle are only destroy this culture.

  15. I think young people which are lost and want to find oneself, 'touch' many different subcultures, although they incompletely understand them. Emo is one of the example of this phenomenon, in my opinion. I don't think emo-teenagers really understand deep ideological basement, but they simply like pose of suffering suiciders. I hate all show-offs, not only emo-show-offs.

  16. To tell the truth I can’t think of anything interesting about this subculture.. It is definitely a fad. Emo teenagers are usually from rich families. They don’t know how to bring themselves to somebody’s attention so they pretend that no one loves them and they are so lonely, they start wearing Emo clothes and listening to sad music about pain and lonelines.

    ReplyDelete
  17. In my opinion emo is very curious subculture. I don't agree with their dark and unhappy lifestyle. It is sad subculture because they want it. But my question is: what for? I think life has more colours then dark.

  18. I think that everyone who belongs to a subculture especially clothing, is still immature. I know from personal experience, most of my friends belongs to a subculture of punk, oi! and rocabilly. I also listen to the same music, go to concerts and events, but dressing in a certain age, it seems to me to be childish. Emo subculture is my opinion only for young teenagers.
